Anglo American Postpones Coking Coal Mine Integration Plan in Kunzhou to 2024

Affected by multiple factors, the miner Anglo American recently stated that it will postpone the integration plan of Australia's Moranbah and Grosvenor coal mines from the original 2022 to 2024.

In order to improve production efficiency and facilitate the sharing of facilities between the two coal mines, Anglo American previously planned to integrate the Moranba Coal Mine and the Grosvenor Coking Coal Mine in Queensland. However, due to the explosion in the Grosvenor Coal Mine in May and restrictions on China's import of Australian coking coal, the company delayed the integration plan of the two coal mines.

Since 2016, Grosvenor Coal Mine has focused on longwall metallurgical coal mining. In May of this year, an explosion occurred in the coal mine during the mining process, causing serious injuries to 5 miners. After the accident, the coal mine immediately suspended long arm mining.

Anglo American Resources stated that the company will postpone the expansion plan of the two coal processing plants until 2022, and is expected to start production in 2024 at the earliest, when the coal processing capacity will increase from 16 million tons to 20 million tons. In addition, Anglo American Resources will lower its coal production forecast in 2022 from the original 25-27 million tons to 22-24 million tons. The output in 2023 is expected to be 23-25 million tons, compared with the original output target of 30 million tons.

Mainly affected by the two accidents at Moranba and Grosvenor coal mines and the movement of longwall working faces in Grosvenor and Caoshu coal mines, Anglo American has reduced its 2020 production target from the original 16-18 million tons range to 17 million tons, down 26% from the 23 million tons in 2019. As the Grosvenor Coal Mine will resume production in June next year, coal production in 2021 is expected to rebound to 18-20 million tons.

In addition, Anglo American Resources plans to develop the Moranbah South underground coking coal mine with a production capacity of 14 million tons. The federal government has approved the development of the mine. However, the project is not in the list of projects recently announced by Anglo American to investors.
